My dog won't look at the camera for a photo session
/As a dog photographer, I get to hear a lot of reasons why people are hesitant to book a dog photography session.
“My dog doesn’t listen, my dog is not well behaved, my dog is reactive, my dog can’t go off leash for photos, my dog is anxious around other people or dogs”, and so on and so on.
Do not let these things stop you from booking that all important photo shoot! I can work with all types of dogs and situations.
But for now let’s focus on one of the biggest objections I hear about photographing dogs: “I know my dog, and he/she won’t look at the camera!”
Well I am here to tell you two things:
1. I can get your dog to look at the camera (well…most of the time!)
I can hear you asking “how?”
I make a lot of weird noises - either by myself or with noise makers
I’ll use a toy
I’ll use treats
I’ll use you!
2. Some of the nicest photos of dogs are of them not looking at the camera!
Think about this:
Wouldn’t you like a photo of your dog staring lovingly into your eyes?
How nice would it be to have a great photo of your dog enjoying the scenery as gorgeous wall art in your home? Just like this one of Kyla below.
Photos of dogs enjoying doing what they like to do, such as running or playing with you or playing with toys, are wonderful reminders of their unique personalities and they are not looking at the camera!
In these photos below none of the dogs are looking at the camera. But I’d bet you would like to have a similar photo of your own dog hanging in a special place on your wall!
So don’t let fear of your dog not listening to you or looking at the camera prevent you from having memories of a lifetime.
Because as you know too well, they are only with us for a short time. When the sad day comes that they are no longer here, all we have are the photos we took to remind us of the special place that they had in our hearts!

Let’s see how Angela Schneider of Big White Dog Photography, giving a behind-the-scenes look at her work, addresses this same objection in her dog photo sessions. Maybe I can learn a thing or two from her as well!
