How to Get Ready for Your Dog Photo Shoot

If you’re a client of Terri J Photography, Toronto, and have a dog photo shoot coming up, you may find this helpful in getting ready.
The best photos come from dogs just being themselves and allowing their personalities to shine! But these tips will help you prepare for our time together and a successful dog photo shoot.
It is a good idea to have your dog bathed and groomed a day or two before the session. Preferably do not do this the same day as it may be too tiring for the dog.
Arrive at the location at least 5 - 10 minutes prior to the start and take a little walk around so that your dog may be acclimatized to the location and work out some of their excitement.
I suggest that you remove any hanging tags from the collar. I will remove your dogs leashes from the photos wherever possible, during the editing process.
Feel free to have your dog wear a fancy collar if you like. Some clients have bows and bandanas for their dogs - that is all up to you! These are your photos so do whatever makes you happy!
However, please, no harnesses, unless there is a medical or other important reason for your dog wearing one. They really do detract from the dog! I like to see the whole dog and I’m sure you will too!
I will bring treats but it is a good idea to bring some too, especially in case of food allergies or preferences. Please also bring some water for your dog.
Don’t forget your dog’s favourite ball or frisbee if he or she loves to play catch!
If your dog is a breed that drools, a cloth to keep him or her clean is recommended.
If the photo shoot is to be done in your home, take time to de-clutter the areas we will be using for the photos.
Important Notes Regarding LeashesThe thinner the leash the better.
If you have a wide leash I may offer you another one to use during the session. This is to make it easier for leash removal from the photos.A four foot leash is best. I do bring a long line in case we need it. Remember you will need to make the leash as invisible as possible and a shorter one is easier to hide.
If you arrive with a poop bag holder hanging from the leash I will ask you to remove it.
I do not work with dogs on flexi leashes so if that is the only leash you have, I will give you a replacement to use during the photo shoot. You may be wondering why.
Firstly, you have less control over the dog for his photos if you are using a flexi. It is far easier to keep the dog in place and hold the leash as I advise if you are simply holding a small, thin leash.
Secondly the handle of the flexi is a pretty large object to properly remove from the photo and your photos will not look good with the handle as a large distraction.
If your photo shoot is to take place at your home
To me there is nothing worse than photos filled with distractions that attract your eyes away from the subject. Think: Visible cords and wires, papers, ornaments, phones, laptops, bags, TV remotes, kids toys etc.
Please take the time to de-clutter, remove all stuff off tables.
Open all blinds and curtains in the rooms we will use for the session.
In the garden remove hoses, shovels, kids toys or anything else that my be a distracting element
Some important things to consider for the Humans!
Please remember to remove your keys and cell phone from your pockets! .While I may be able to fix some of the ugly bulges, I can’t promise to fix them all and extensive re-touching can be pricey! I’ll try to remind you at the time of the session as well.
Those treat bags or pouches hanging at your waist - remove them too!
These are the type of things that distract from and spoil your photos!
